Chapter 17

Saying Goodbye

When Eira awoke, she lay in bed in her pajamas—a tank top and shorts that just barely covered her rear. She sat up on the edge of her bed and looked at her bare feet and wiggled her toes. She couldn’t remember how she got home from the hospital last night after her clinical shift; she didn’t remember riding the bus.

How else would I have gotten home, though? Why don’t I remember?

She scrunched her face, trying to recall the night before. She could only pull up clouded bits and pieces, none of which made sense. “Rache?” she called out loud as she stood and walked toward her door. She stepped on an object in the middle of her bedroom floor and bent to pick it up. It was an unopened protein bar.

Where did that come from?

Since she had been feeling better, she had been able to keep her room clean, even immaculate. There was no way she would leave something like that on her floor.

She opened her door and walked down the hallway out to the living room. “What happened last night? How did I get ho . . . ome?”

Stephen was asleep on her apartment couch.

Why was he sleeping here? Rubbing her forehead, still trying to remember, she walked over and studied his quiet form. The look on his face made her think he was uncomfortable, yet he was fast asleep on his back. His head, covered crookedly with his hat, rested on a pillow at one end of the couch. His sock-covered feet hung awkwardly past the other end. If she hadn’t been so confused about how she had got home last night, she would have enjoyed watching him sleep.

Rachel came out of her bedroom, rubbing sleep from her eyes. Her feet shuffled on the hardwood floor. “Eira? Are you okay, hun?”

“Rache,” she whispered, walking over to her, “why is Stephen asleep on our couch? He’s supposed to be in Canada.” Eira gently massaged her temples. “What happened last night? I don’t remember taking the bus home from the hospital.”

Rachel looked at her with pity in her eyes.

Eira clenched her teeth. She hated it when people looked at her like that.

“Eira, honey, what is the last thing you remember?”

Eira furrowed her brow. Why would Rachel ask such a strange question? Her gut clenched uncomfortably. “I started my first day at the hospital in the children’s cancer ward. I filled out some paperwork and met all the patients. Then I woke up here, and in my pajamas. Why? What happened?”

Rachel took her hand and led her over to a kitchen chair to sit. Eira set the protein bar she was still holding onto the table.

“Are you sure that’s all that you remember?” asked Rachel, caution evident in her voice.

“Yes,” she huffed. “What in the world is going on, Rachel?”

“Honey, you’ve been working in the cancer ward for almost two months. Yesterday was not your first day.”

What?

“What do you mean, I’ve been working there for two months? I started yesterday.
